Notice About Cigna Healthcare

For the past several months, Highpoint Health with Ascension Saint Thomas has been working to establish a new agreement with Cigna Healthcare that protects our patients’ and community’s access to in-network care. Unfortunately, Cigna has been unwilling to finalize a fair agreement that acknowledges our rising costs and has terminated its current contract with our health system and providers.

This means that our:

  • Riverview, Trousdale, Winchester and Sewanee locations - hospitals, clinics and providers - will be out of network with Cigna commercial plans beginning October 16, 2025.
  • Sumner locations – the hospital, Sumner Station, clinics and providers - will be out of network with Cigna commercial plans beginning December 4, 2025.
  • Highpoint Health will continue to treat all patients in need of emergency care through our hospitals' Emergency Rooms. 
  • Patients may continue to access our hospital and providers as an out-of-network provider and should call the phone number on the back of their Cigna insurance card to understand their specific benefits.
  • Patients who are pregnant, receiving treatment for a special condition or have a procedure scheduled after the termination date may qualify for continuity of care and should call Cigna to learn more about their continuity of care benefits.
  • Patients who want to maintain access to in-network care at Highpoint Health should encourage their employer to consider an alternative insurance provider and plan. For a list of commercial insurance plans that are in network with our hospital, click here.

We are deeply concerned about the impact and disruption this change may have on our patients and local employers and apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. Please know we are actively working toward a resolution and will continue to keep you updated as we move forward.
