Advanced 24/7 Emergency Care

Our emergency rooms are staffed around the clock by physicians who are board-certified in emergency medicine, not nurse practitioners or physician’s assistants. Our doctors all have advanced training and additional years of education specifically for providing emergency care to patients.

The safety of you and your loved ones is our top priority. To provide the highest quality care in the safest possible environment, we:

  • Consistently monitor critically ill patients
  • Provide lab testing directly at your bedside
  • Register patients from their bed to avoid delays in evaluation and treatment
  • Partner with Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital for pediatric care
  • Provide biannual training for all staff with Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital for pediatric emergencies
  • Track our performance improvement measures to ensure a high quality of care
  • Ensure all nursing staff have the following certifications:
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS)
    • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
    • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)

We are fully capable of handling all emergencies, from the administration of clot-busting medications for strokes to heart attacks. We even provide safe spaces for crises requiring psychiatric care. This level of emergency medical coverage is not often found within local ERs.

What to Expect

Benefits of receiving emergency care at Highpoint Health

Visits to the emergency room can be stressful. Our team works hard to make your visit as comfortable as possible. You can expect:

  • A high level of compassion and commitment to quality outcomes
  • Access to physicians and specialists who can answer your questions and concerns
  • Constant and clear communication
  • Short average wait times
  • Seamless transition to an inpatient room if you are admitted to the hospital
  • 24/7 lab testing with the ability for results to be read on site
  • 24/7 respiratory coverage for respiratory emergencies
  • Close collaboration with community primary care providers for outpatient follow-up

Easy Transport for a Higher Level of Care

When emergencies require access to a higher level of care offered by a larger medical center, our facilities collaborate for a seamless, system-wide approach to emergency care ensuring quick communication and response for local transfers. We can easily transport you to another facility if we believe you may benefit from a hospital with additional resources to treat your condition.

When to Go to the Emergency Room

Medical emergencies are not black and white. We understand that it can be difficult sometimes to determine whether your symptoms require a trip to the emergency room or an appointment with your primary care provider.

While emergencies can present in many ways, the following symptoms are a sign that you should seek emergency medical care right away.

  • Chest pain
  • Coughing or throwing up blood
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Heavy bleeding that won’t stop
  • High fever that is not decreasing with medication
  • New confusion
  • Numbness or weakness, especially on one side of your body
  • Persistent vomiting
  • Potential broken bones
  • Seizures
  • Serious burns
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as those that cause swelling or trouble breathing or swallowing
  • Sudden limited mobility
  • Unconsciousness

It can sometimes be confusing to know which symptoms require a trip to the ER. If you are experiencing an illness or injury that isn’t life-threatening, primary care may be an alternative care option. This alternative is best for:

  • Non-urgent medical concerns
  • Ongoing care related to a chronic illness
  • Physical exams
  • Treatment for mild illnesses or injuries

ER Wait Times

When you or a family member has an emergency, the last thing you want to do is spend hours in the ER waiting room. Our average ER wait time from emergency room arrival to being seen by a provider is less than the national average. We believe in being transparent with our ER wait times. You can always check our live wait time widget for a rolling average of the last four hours. Please note that wait times can change rapidly and are provided to you as information but are not guaranteed.
