Low Testosterone
Feeling sluggish? It could be low testosterone.
Testosterone does far more than build muscle. It plays a key role in puberty, helping boys develop facial and body hair, a deeper voice and increased strength. In adult men, testosterone is essential for sperm production and overall health. Levels naturally decline with age, but when the body doesn’t produce enough, it can lead to testosterone deficiency syndrome, or low testosterone (low T). Low T can cause an overall “sluggish” feeling that many men notice as they get older.
What are the symptoms?
- Low sex drive
- Fatigue
- Reduced lean muscle mass
- Irritability
- Depression
What causes low testosterone?
Some people are born with conditions that cause testosterone deficiency. Others develop low T because of damage to testicles, chemotherapy or radiation, disease, infection, aging, obesity, metabolic syndrome or HIV. The use of some medications, such as antidepressants or narcotics, may also lead to lower levels of testosterone.
How is it diagnosed?
Because the symptoms of low testosterone can overlap with other conditions, the most important step is a blood test to measure your total testosterone level. Your provider will also review your health history, discuss your symptoms, and may do a brief physical exam before ordering lab work.
How is it treated?
Treatment varies by patient, but common options include testosterone injections or topical therapies such as gels, creams, liquids or patches.
