Highpoint Health – Sumner Launches Postpartum Support Group to Support New Mothers Beyond Delivery

Free weekly group aims to provide connection, encouragement and resources for women navigating the postpartum journey
GALLATIN, Tenn. – Bringing a new baby home is often described as one of life's most joyful experiences, but it can also be one of the most overwhelming. According to Postpartum Support International, 1 in 5 women experience a perinatal mood or anxiety disorder, making maternal mental health one of the most common complications associated with pregnancy and childbirth.
To help local mothers in Gallatin and surrounding areas feel supported during the transition to parenthood, Highpoint Health – Sumner has launched a new Postpartum Support Group, a free weekly program designed to provide connection, education and encouragement for women navigating life after childbirth. The initiative reflects the hospital's commitment to supporting women not only during pregnancy and delivery, but throughout the postpartum journey.
The support group is led by McKayla Gammons, CLCBI, BO-CNR, NSB, and Meghan Lockwood, RN, BSN, IBCLC, lactation consultants at Highpoint Health – Sumner, and is open to mothers who have welcomed a baby within the past year. Participants will have opportunities to connect with other moms, discuss common challenges and successes, learn coping mechanisms, receive educational resources and build supportive relationships in a welcoming, judgment-free environment.
While much of the attention after birth naturally focuses on the newborn, healthcare leaders say mothers often need support, reassurance and connection as they adjust to life after delivery.
"The postpartum support group was created because we just see so many moms that are overwhelmed in the day-to-day of becoming a new mom," said Jamie Green, RN, director of Women's Services at Highpoint Health – Sumner. "Everybody wants to take care of baby, and we just wanted to let all these moms know that we're here for you and to support and listen to you."
The postpartum period can bring significant emotional, physical and lifestyle changes. Feelings of exhaustion, uncertainty, stress and isolation are common, yet many women hesitate to ask for help. The new support group was created to ensure mothers in Gallatin and surrounding communities know they have a place where they can be heard, supported and connected with others who understand what they are experiencing.
"We want our moms to feel like they are in a safe space that they can express their feelings and what they're going through with us," Green said. "We are all moms. We don't have it figured out either, and so we will share our own personal stories with you, give you some coping mechanisms to get you through this phase, and also educate you through this postpartum phase."
The group is intended for women throughout Gallatin and surrounding communities, including Portland, Westmoreland, Lafayette, Hartsville and White House, who are seeking support during the first year after welcoming a baby. Whether participants are first-time mothers or growing their families, organizers hope the group will provide a trusted space to ask questions, find encouragement and build meaningful connections.
For mothers who may feel anxious or uncertain about attending, Jamie Green wants them to know they are not alone.
"I would want them to know that we see you," Green said. "I was a new mom once and I was also a nurse at the same time, and I had so many questions. You just don't know what you don't know, and we are here to be that sounding board and to listen and support you."
Hospital leaders say the program reflects a broader commitment to caring for mothers beyond the delivery room and strengthening the health and well-being of families throughout the community.
"We are delivering joy and building families here in Gallatin," Green said. "We want you to know that it is our honor and privilege to be a part of such a special day in your life, welcoming your new baby into the world."
The Postpartum Support Group meets every Wednesday at 10 a.m. in the Women's Services Education Room on the second floor of Highpoint Health – Sumner, located at 555 Hartsville Pike in Gallatin. Participation is free, and babies are welcome to attend with their mothers. For more information, contact McKayla Gammons at 615-328-4262 or email mckayla.gammons@lpnt.net.
