Highpoint Health Seeks Approval to Expand Services at Sumner Station Campus

May 04, 2026

Proposed expansion would add cardiac care, surgical services and the county’s only inpatient pediatric unit to meet evolving community healthcare needs.

Gallatin, Tenn. (May 4, 2026) — Highpoint Health with Ascension Saint Thomas has filed a certificate of need (CON) application to the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission seeking approval to expand hospital services at its Highpoint Health – Sumner Station campus, bringing new inpatient, surgical and specialty care services to one of the fastest-growing areas of Sumner County.

The proposed $59.3 million expansion builds upon Highpoint Health’s long-term commitment to the region and reflects updated plans designed to enhance emergency preparedness and access to care. New services proposed as part of the application include a cardiac catheterization lab, a surgical department with operating rooms, and the county’s only inpatient pediatric unit, in addition to inpatient medical, surgical and intensive care beds.

If approved, the project would expand services at the existing Sumner Station medical campus on Big Station Camp Boulevard to care for a broader range of patient needs close to home.

“As our community continues to grow, so does the need for more hospital services in this area,” said Rod Harkleroad, RN, MMHC, market president of Highpoint Health with Ascension Saint Thomas. “The expanded services proposed at Sumner Station are designed to support patients during critical moments — whether that’s a heart-related emergency, a necessary surgical procedure, or specialized care for children — while keeping families close to where they live and work.”

Expanded Services to Strengthen Emergency and Inpatient Care

Important additions to strengthen emergency and inpatient care are included in the proposal:

  • An eight-bed inpatient pediatric unit, the only unit of its kind in Sumner County
  • 16 medical/surgical and telemetry inpatient beds
  • A four-bed intensive care unit
  • Two operating rooms and associated surgical support services
  • A cardiac catheterization lab and endoscopy suite for advanced diagnostic and interventional cardiac procedures
  • Expanded ancillary services, including pharmacy, laboratory and dietary

These additions would complement the services already available at Sumner Station, which include 24/7 adult and pediatric emergency care, outpatient cancer services, diagnostic imaging, and rehabilitation therapy.

Meeting the Needs of a Rapidly Growing Region

Located in a key growth corridor between Gallatin and Hendersonville, the Sumner Station campus sits near new housing developments, schools and major transportation routes. Countywide population growth — particularly in western Sumner County — has increased demand for timely, accessible hospital care closer to home.

The proposed expansion would improve access for patients and emergency medical services, reduce the need for transfers to other facilities, and help ensure capacity for future growth across the Highpoint Health system.

“We view this proposal as an investment in the long-term health and resilience of our community,” Harkleroad said. “Our goal is to deliver the right level of care, at the right place, at the right time — now and well into the future.”

Construction and additional hiring would follow approval by the Tennessee Health Facilities Commission.
