Sumner County Schools and Highpoint Health announce a school based clinic in Portland, TN on March 2, 2026.

Private-public partnership aims to reduce barriers to learning, make kids and communities healthier

Highpoint Health with Ascension Saint Thomas, in partnership with Sumner County Schools, is proud to announce a new school-based clinic at J.W. Wiseman Elementary School in Portland, Tennessee. This innovative initiative is designed to improve access to healthcare for local families and support student success.

Sumner County Schools and Highpoint Health worked collaboratively to design a clinic model that removes barriers for students, families, and the broader community. Construction is underway, and the clinic is expected to open in Summer 2026 before the 2026-2027 school year.

“This partnership is a game-changer for our students and families," Superintendent of Sumner County Schools Dr. Scott Langford said. "When health needs are met quickly and conveniently, it helps keep students in school, supports working parents, and allows kids to stay focused on learning.”

When evaluating areas of greatest need, Highpoint Health and Sumner County Schools focused on making a meaningful impact. Within a five-mile radius of the clinic, there are eight schools, making J.W. Wiseman an ideal location to serve a large number of students and families in the Portland community. Sumner County Schools is leasing the previously unutilized space and coordinating with the healthcare system to ensure students can access care during the school day. Highpoint Health is overseeing and funding construction, staffing, and clinical operations.

The clinic will provide convenient, on-site medical services staffed by a dedicated nurse practitioner. In many cases, the nurse practitioner will be able to treat students at school, reducing the need for parents or guardians to take time off work for routine medical visits. The clinic will offer both walk-in hours and scheduled appointments, ensuring flexibility for families as well as the greater Portland community.

Services for students include the diagnosis and treatment of common illnesses or symptoms of illness, and treatments for basic injuries. For the community, the clinic will offer family wellness and pediatric care, including routine check-ups and preventive care, treatment for illnesses and injuries, as well as health screenings and immunizations. In the future, the clinic may offer special screenings such as sports physicals and immunizations for students.

“This project reflects our commitment to meeting the community where they are,” said Rod Harkleroad, RN, Chief Executive Officer of Highpoint Health – Sumner with Ascension Saint Thomas. “By bringing care into the school setting, we’re removing barriers and helping families stay healthy.”

By addressing health needs promptly, the clinic aims to reduce school absences and keep students engaged in learning. Services will focus on family wellness and pediatric care, creating a trusted resource for preventive and routine health needs.
