Highpoint Health with Ascension Saint Thomas has filed a Certificate of Need application to build a free-standing emergency department (FSED) in Wilson County. This new emergency care location will offer the growing communities in Wilson County easier access to needed emergency care and other medical services.

The proposed facility will be located near the intersection of Hwy 109 and Hwy 70, approximately 12 miles from Highpoint Health’s hospital in Gallatin. Once completed, the FSED will be open 24/7, have eight beds and be staffed with board-certified emergency-trained physicians. It will offer services for both children and adults and feature a trauma room, lab and diagnostic services including general radiography and CT.

“Wilson County is one of the fastest growing regions in Tennessee, and as more people seek to call it home and more businesses move into the area, its healthcare needs will grow and change,” said Rod Harkleroad, market president of Highpoint Health. “Our team is focused on providing great care close to home across this region. The addition of this free-standing emergency department in this part of Wilson County will provide needed access to emergency services to the surrounding communities.”

With nearly 150,000 residents, Wilson County is experiencing an unprecedented demand for accessible healthcare and emergency services as its population grows. As more families with children move to the area, having more options for high-quality care for people of all ages from trusted providers is essential.

The proposed FSED will provide quality emergency care from Highpoint Health emergency department physicians while connecting community members to services at nearby Highpoint Health – Sumner and locations within the wider Ascension Saint Thomas network for continuity of care when needed. The proposed facility will also create new job opportunities for local residents, contributing to the economic growth and vitality of the area.

“There is a need for access to reliable and immediate care in Wilson County,” said Dr. Geoff Lifferth, chief medical officer of Highpoint Health. “This proposed facility will give families and residents assurance that their emergency care needs can be met. We are excited by the prospect of supporting Wilson County and bringing the trusted care of Highpoint Health to these communities."
