Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Sumner County need another hospital?

In Middle Tennessee, Sumner County, and especially the area around Highpoint Health – Sumner Station with Ascension Saint Thomas, is growing rapidly. The area has already seen new subdivisions, new schools, and additional transportation infrastructure. The City of Gallatin has grown by 44.7% over the last 10 years, and we anticipate continued growth in the counties surrounding Nashville. To keep pace with this organic growth, we must expand healthcare services. Highpoint Health – Sumner Station is uniquely situated in this growth corridor to make an immediate impact and increase neighborhood access to high-quality care from a trusted healthcare system with roots in the region.

How is this different from what exists today at Sumner Station?

Today, Sumner Station provides 24/7 emergency care and outpatient services. The proposed expansion would add inpatient beds and major hospital capabilities like an inpatient pediatric unit, 2 operating rooms, a cardiac cath lab, and an endoscopy suite, so more patients can be treated on site rather than transferred.

Why are these additions important?

These additions are crucial because they ensure our community has access to a broad range of life-saving care:

  • Pediatric Expertise: Provides Sumner County's first inpatient pediatric unit, ensuring children can be treated close to home without long transfers.
  • Advanced Heart and Interventional Care: Enables advanced diagnostics and treatment, such as cardiac catheterization, to handle serious emergencies and reduce transfers for complex procedures.
  • Streamlined Emergency Response: Enables care teams and EMS to respond to a broader range of emergencies and maintain continuity of care for adults and children.
How does this benefit EMS and first responders?

A hospital at Sumner Station gives EMS another appropriate destination for patients who need inpatient or advanced procedural care, especially in a high-growth area where transport times matter.

Will this create jobs locally?

Yes. If approved, the hospital expansion would bring additional clinical, operational, and support roles to the community.

What’s the timeline?

We have submitted a refined proposal to the state’s Certificate of Need review process. When our proposal is approved, construction timelines will be determined.
