Sumner Regional Medical Center receives Trauma Center designation

Sumner Regional Medical Center (SRMC) is pleased to announce its designation as a Level III Trauma Center by the Tennessee Department of Health.  

A trauma center provides access to specialized critical care for patients who have suffered life-threatening injuries from falls, motor-vehicle or recreational-vehicle crashes and other accidents. With this designation, Sumner Regional Medical Center is now the only designated trauma center north of Davidson County in Tennessee.

“Our commitment to advancing critical-care services for people in Sumner, Robertson, Macon, Trousdale, Smith and Wilson Counties will continue to grow along with our community,” said Susan Peach, CEO of Sumner Regional Medical Center. “Having life-saving critical care available without having to drive to Nashville is a ‘must-have’ for residents of the communities we serve, and we continue to be dedicated to providing the highest quality of health care.”

In February 2019, SRMC’s Trauma Team received full Trauma Center designation from Rene’ C. Saunders, MD, chair of the Tennessee Board for Licensing Health Care Facilities.

“The Board recognizes the commitment and efforts of you and your staff in providing optimal care for seriously injured patients,” said Dr. Saunders. She continued, “Your hospital continues to play an important role in Tennessee's system of trauma care.”

The Sumner Regional Medical Center Trauma Team is built from a variety of medical specialties that allows the hospital to be designated for this specialized level of trauma care.

These specialties include:

• Four (4) board-certified, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS)-certified trauma surgeons who provide services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
• Trauma Medical Director, Brian Reed, MD, who is board certified and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certified Multi-disciplinary Trauma Committee comprised of trauma/general surgery, orthopedic surgery, emergency medicine, internal medicine, anesthesia, hospital administration and Sumner County EMS.
• Emergency Department with all attending physicians board certified in Emergency Care
• Trauma Program Manager Donna Russell, RN, BSN; Trauma Registrar Carrie Austin, RN, BSN
• Critical Care Unit with 24/7 physician coverage

Trauma Medical Director Brian Reed, MD, who is a Gallatin native, is excited to finally have the program in place. “To have trauma care capabilities of the highest degree in my hometown is a wonderful thing, and the fulfillment of years of hard work,” said Dr. Reed.
