Highpoint Health – Sumner Celebrates Two-Year Anniversary of Milk Bank Depot and Expands Services to Provide Human Donor Milk
November 21, 2024
Highpoint Health – Sumner with Ascension Saint Thomas recently celebrated the two-year anniversary of its Milk Bank Depot, which has collected an incredible 6,183 ounces of milk for babies across Tennessee since its opening. In partnership with the Mothers’ Milk Bank of Tennessee, this program has played a vital role in supporting the health of preterm and medically fragile infants. The donor milk collected at the hospital is transferred to the milk bank, which in turn supplies area neonatal intensive care units with human donor milk.
This milestone comes with exciting news: Highpoint Health – Sumner is not only a drop off location for donor milk, but the Women’s Services department will now begin to receive milk. Mothers have the option to use pasteurized human donor milk to provide supplemental nutrition to their babies. With preterm birth affecting about 1 in every 10 infants in the United States — and Tennessee having one of the highest preterm birth rates — this advancement helps improve outcomes for vulnerable babies.
“We are grateful to the generous mothers who have donated their milk, making a profound difference for families in Middle Tennessee. As we continue to grow our Women’s Services at Highpoint Health - Sumner, our mission remains focused on supporting and improving options for mother and baby,” said Tracey McMahon, RN, BSN, IBCLC, Lactation Consultant at Highpoint Health – Sumner.
