Riverview Regional Medical Center Opens New Emergency Department
8-bed ER opened 24/7 on May 20, 2013

Riverview Regional Medical Center (RRMC) welcomed hospital employees, volunteers, board members, community chamber members, county officials, and Emergency Management Services personnel to an open house for the hospital’s newly renovated and expanded emergency department (ED) facility in Monday, May 13, 2013.

“We are so pleased to be able to offer a brand new emergency department for the residents of Carthage,” said Susan Peach, CEO of HighPoint Health System.  “This community has been so supportive of the improvements we’re making to your hospital, and the exciting thing is…we have more to do.  I look forward to celebrating many more joyful occasions with you in the years to come as we continue to grow and improve the health care services we provide in Smith County.”

The ceremony included a celebratory ribbon-cutting and guided tours for attendees.  The new 8-bed facility has been under construction since September 2012 and opened to the public on Monday, May 20.

“The emergency department at RRMC was previously a 4-bed facility and offered little space for family members and visitors of patients,” said Rod Harkleroad, administrator of RRMC. “The new space offers a large lobby for families who are waiting, and provides easier flow of care for the medical staff.  With the hospital’s continuing growth, we expect to treat over 8,000 patients this year in the new emergency department, including walk-in patients and those brought by ambulance.”

Features of the new ED facility include:

  • 3,078 square-feet of new and renovated space
  • A 2-bed Trauma/Chest Pain room
  • Private obstetrics and gynecology room
  • Secured psychiatric evaluation and treatment room
  • Decontamination room
  • Central monitoring system at nursing station
  • Comfortable, large waiting room
  • Updated equipment

Lori Nixon, director of RRMC’s emergency department, has been a nurse for 25 years and says that the expansion was greatly needed.

“The additional capacity will reduce wait times for many patients and enable them to be treated and released or admitted to the hospital more quickly,” Nixon said.

Additional renovations and equipment upgrades to the hospital are expected to be complete later this year.
