Veteran Healthcare Executive Mary Jo Lewis Tapped for Top Leadership Post

When the sales transaction between Sumner Regional Health Systems (HighPoint Health System) and LifePoint Hospitals® is completed later this month, Mary Jo Lewis will become the new Chief Executive Officer of HighPoint Health System, according to William F. Carpenter III, President and Chief Executive Officer of LifePoint Hospitals.   


The sales transaction between HighPoint Health System and LifePoint Hospitals is expected to close on August 31, subject to final approval by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court and satisfaction of customary closing conditions.  


“Mary Jo is an accomplished hospital CEO with a track record of achieving significant success for hospitals,” said Carpenter.  “She understands how to work effectively with physicians, employees and volunteers to ensure the best possible care for patients.  She has the right combination of experience, expertise, and leadership capabilities to lead HighPoint Health System forward during this exciting time of change.”


Mary Jo LewisSince 1999, Lewis has served as CEO of Jackson Purchase Medical Center (JPMC), a 107-bed acute care hospital in Mayfield, Ky., also affiliated with LifePoint Hospitals®.  Under Lewis’ leadership, the facility achieved remarkable success. In 2003, JPMC received LifePoint Hospitals’ High Five Award for reaching the highest level of operational excellence in the Company.  Because of Lewis’s focus on quality care and patient service, during her tenure JPMC was consistently a top performer among LifePoint’s hospitals in achieving high levels of patient satisfaction.  In 2009, JPMC was recognized as one of the Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® based on its outstanding overall organizational performance.  This prestigious award recognizes hospitals that have achieved excellence in clinical outcomes, patient safety, patient satisfaction, financial performance, and operational efficiency.  Also, in 2009, JPMC was named one the “100 Best Places to Work in Healthcare” by Modern Healthcare magazine, a national award that recognizes healthcare organizations that have achieved workplace excellence.


Prior to joining JPMC, Lewis worked for 11 years at Parkway Regional Hospital in Fulton, Ky., where she started as Controller then served as Administrator for the majority of her tenure. 


Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee at Martin, then a master’s degree in finance from Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill.


She is board-certified in healthcare management as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), as well as a Certified Public Accountant.  Lewis is active in the Kentucky Hospital Association, serving on the Legislative Committee.


Involved in the community, Lewis has served as Chairman of the Fulton Independent School Board and on the Economic Development Committee for Mayfield/Graves County, Ky.  She is a member of the Rotary Club of Mayfield.
